The Tuxpan Mangrove and Wetland System is located on the Gulf Coastal Plain, ten kilometres from the city of Tuxpan. It covers an area of 3,500 hectares, comprising marshes, coastal lagoons, and the largest remaining mangrove forest north of the Papaloapan River. Notable features include the mangroves of Tumilco and of Tampamachoco Lagoon, which is connected by a canal to Tamiahua Lagoon which is found to the north of the Site. This channel provides transport links for local communities as well as connectivity between the lagoons for species. The Site provides a habitat for at least 17 threatened or near-threatened species, including the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis), the grey griggerfish (Balistes capriscus) and the Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus). The wetland plays a key role in shaping local identity as it enables traditional “charanga” shrimp fishing, a pre-Hispanic practice. The Site may be affected by increasing urbanization in the surrounding area, accompanied by a rise in agricultural and oil transportation activities.
