This Site, located in an agricultural region known as “La Campiña”, is an endorheic seasonal lagoon with a maximum depth of around two metres during periods of heavy rain. In its shallow parts, land plants adapted to aquatic conditions such as the helicophyllous moss (Riella helicophylla) can be found. The Site is home to nationally endangered species such as the pondweed Althenia orientalis and to endemic wetland species including the western spadefoot toad (Pelobates cultripes). It is used for scientific study and recreation and includes a footpath and a bird observatory. In the surrounding area, archaeological remains from the Iron Age and Roman period can be found. The Site also includes the Tíscar saltworks, a now inactive continental saltworks of high cultural value, forming part of the landscape and reflecting ancient local knowledge and sustainable practices for harvesting natural resources.
