Overview
The Site is one of three large estuarine lagoons along the eastern coast of Flinders Island, in the Bass Strait to the north of Tasmania. It is a regionally representative example of a coastal estuarine wetland system. It comprises a diverse range of seasonal and permanent marshlands, forests, heathlands and woodlands. These habitats support globally threatened species such as the vulnerable dwarf galaxias (Galaxiella pusilla), a freshwater fish, and nationally threatened species such as the nationally endangered Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila audax fleayi). The Site provides important resting and feeding areas for over 20 migratory bird species. Water sports, recreational hunting, nature-based tourism, and educational activities are practiced at the Site.
