This Site on the Pacific coast encompasses diverse ecosystems, including low deciduous forests, riparian vegetation, rocky cliffs, coral reefs and lagoons. Recognized for its wealth of species and high levels of endemism, it provides critical habitat for commercially important species of fish such as the burrito grunt (Anisotremus interruptus), finescale triggerfish (Balistes polylepis) and bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus). Two major ocean currents converge at the Site, and its coral reef system hosts species from both the Panamanian and Californian marine biogeographic regions, including hard corals of the Pocillopora genus such as P. inflata and P. eydouxi, and the culturally significant purple snail (Plicopurpura columellaris). The Site’s ecosystems support vital services such as food provision, coastal protection, carbon storage, tourism and education. The main threats stem from expanding human settlements, land conversion and waste management challenges. Current restoration efforts focus on controlling invasive alien species, restoring vegetation cover and rehabilitating reefs.
