The Site is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, located 30 kilometres off the coast of Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit. It is a vital haven for seabirds, hosting 92 species, nine of which nest in large colonies. Frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) are the most abundant, alongside several species of booby, gull and pelican, which rely on the island’s diverse habitats for breeding. The Site supports soft and hard corals and provides habitat for threatened species such as the endangered brown sea cucumber (Isostichopus fuscus) and the western spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata), listed under Mexico’s national legislation. Local communities participate in efforts to limit the spread of exotic grasses. The Site is also a key location for long-term research on the blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) and for monitoring corals, invertebrates and tropical fish.
