The Site consists of a sandy beach with mangrove forests dominated by black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) and red mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata), which contribute to coastal stability and habitat integrity. Designated in 2003 with an initial area of 54 hectares, the Site’s recorded area was amended to nearly 140 ha in the 2026 update, following a more accurate calculation. It is one of the four most important nesting beaches for the vulnerable leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) on Mexico’s eastern Pacific coast, and is recognized nationally as an index nesting beach for assessing population trends of this species. The Site is also of vital importance for the vulnerable olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas), which are both classified as endangered under Mexican law. Conservation efforts have been implemented since 1996 through “Proyecto Laúd” (the “Leatherback Project”) which carries out a long-term conservation, research and management programme for sea turtles in the region. Outreach activities are conducted in nearby communities, and particularly in local schools. The Site was declared a national reserve and refuge for marine turtles in 1986 and was designated as a sanctuary in 2002.
