The Site comprises the estuaries of three temporary rivers originating in the Moyen Atlas mountain range. These rivers flow through deep gorges before reaching the Atlantic coast, where they form sandy beaches, cliffs and dunes. The dune systems help regulate water salinity and provide habitat for the endangered plant Sarcocornia perennis in the upstream sections where the river channels widen. The range of habitats supports several migratory bird species, including the lesser black-backed gull (Larus fuscus), Audouin’s gull (Larus audouinii) and the common scoter (Melanitta nigra). The Site also supports the Brongersma’s toad (Pseudepidalea brongersmai) which is endemic to Morocco. The coastal waters are highly productive due to oceanic upwelling, supporting local fisheries. The wetlands contribute to flood regulation and help reduce damage during episodic high-flow events, including along transport infrastructure such as the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway. Tourism is increasing in the area.
