The Site is a seasonal, endorheic lagoon located in an agricultural area of the province of Córdoba. Depending on weather conditions, it accumulates water from rainfall, surface runoff and a small local river system that is also seasonal. This makes for cycles of flooding and drying that can extend over several years. Periods of drought are becoming increasingly pronounced due to climate change. With at least 188 confirmed species, including a rare endemic type of green algae (Tolypella hispanica) and internationally vulnerable dragonflies, amphibians and birds such as the common pochard (Aythya ferina), the Site is a biodiversity hotspot. The surrounding area features archaeological remains, including an Iberian settlement known as “El Salobral” dating from the Iron Age. The Site, which plays an important role in local climate regulation, recreation and tourism, is currently undergoing restoration work as part of a restoration plan covering several lagoons in Córdoba. It is part of the Natura 2000 network, designated as a nature reserve, and included in the Spanish National Wetlands Inventory.
