Overview
The Site covers both sides of the border between the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. It comprises large areas of flat land in the lower reach of the Havel River, as well as two adjacent shallow lakes between Havelberg and Hohennauen. Despite changes caused by human development, this is a dynamic floodplain with regular flooding of the adjacent lowland areas, making it a near-natural wetland. The area is an important breeding, resting and wintering area for numerous species of grassland, wading and waterbirds. Among other nature reserves and parks, it is part of two European Union Natura 2000 areas. Additionally, the Site is of particular importance for flood control, recreation and tourism.
