Polar Bear Pass. 24/05/82; Northwest Territories; 262,400 ha; 75°43'N 098°40'W. International Biological Programme Site; National Wildlife Area. A wetland oasis in a dry high Arctic desert' consisting of a valley floor dotted with numerous lakes, tundra ponds and exceptionally productive meadows, grasses, sedges, mosses, lichens and flowering plants. A super-abundance of insects provide food for large numbers of breeding shorebirds (12 species). An important resting and feeding area for migrating birds. The pass takes its name from the polar bears migrating through from March to November. The purpose of most visits are for wildlife research or ecological studies. Ramsar site no. 245.
