Materials presented on this website, particularly maps and territorial information, are as-is and as-available based on available data and do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area, or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries.
The Site covers some 85% of the Chonghu National Wetland Park in Gong’an County of Hubei Province. It is composed of the permanent and seasonally flooded areas of the interfluvial Chong Lake. The water level of the Lake fluctuates seasonally, creating a diverse range of habitats including shallow and deep-water sections, floating and submerged aquatic plants, grasslands and woodlands. The Site is one of the most densely populated wetlands in the country in terms of its freshwater animals and plants and has an important role in biodiversity conservation. Its habitats support rare and endangered animals such as Chinese three-keeled pond turtle (Mauremys reevesii) and yellow-breasted bunting (Emberiza aureola), and host more than 40,000 birds annually, including species such as common pochard (Aythya ferina) and rustic bunting (Emberiza rustica), which migrate on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. It stores flood waters within the Jingjian flood-diversion system and helps in lessening the effects of floods from the adjacent Dongqing River.
