The Site lies in the lower reaches of the Huaihe River basin, one of seven major river basins in the country, and lies within the Huai’an Baima Lake National Wetland. It covers the southern part of the Baima Lake and forms a relatively independent hydrological unit, characterized by stable water level, shallow depth, high water transparency, and submerged macrophytes that cover 50% of the lake and provide important habitat for endangered aquatic species such as the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) and Reeves’ turtle (Mauremys reevesii). The Site also support over 25,000 birds from 210 species, many of which are threatened or migratory. There are 68 species of fish, 18 of which are endemic to China and are important to maintain the biodiversity of the biogeographical region. Besides the rich biodiversity, the Site also helps in regulating floods, recharging groundwater, and ensuring good water quality for surrounding agriculture and industries. Through various restoration efforts, the storage capacity and the overall ecological health of the lake have improved in recent years.
