Overview

The Site is in the Guangdong Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve, which is one of the six mangrove natural reserves in the country; it covers some 40% of the Reserve’s area. The Site is located along the north-eastern coast of Shenzhen Bay, where rivers meet the sea in an estuarine area of extensive intertidal mudflats and mangrove forests. The mudflats are densely populated with benthic organisms which are important food sources for birds migrating on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. The mangrove forests harbour threatened plants including Chinese agarwood (Aquilaria sinensis) and small persimmon (Diospyros vaccinioides), a vulnerable Chinese cobra (Naja atra), and rare waterbirds such as Baer’s pochard (Aythya baeri), great knot (Calidris tenuirostris) and yellow-breasted bunting (Emberiza aureola). Despite having a relatively small area, almost 35,000 birds were recorded at the Site from 2017 to 2021, making it an important bird conservation area in the South Chinese Rainforest Biogeographic Region. The Site has a subtropical monsoon climate and there are many typhoons every year. In addition to playing an important role in carbon sequestration, the mangroves protect the coastal area and its biodiversity from such extreme weather events.
