Ado Awaye Lake is located about 20 kilometres west of Iseyin on a rocky ridge commonly referred to as the “sleeping lion” and is the only mountaintop “suspended lake” in Africa. The Lake serves as a natural reservoir, storing water from rainfall and regulating its release downstream. This helps to mitigate the effects of seasonal rainfall variations and ensures a consistent water supply for people and biodiversity in the area. The lake and its surrounding wetlands provide habitats for diverse plants and animals, including threatened species such as the African mahogany (Afzelia africana) and the diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin). In addition to offering habitats that sustain biodiversity, the Site plays a crucial role in water purification, groundwater recharge, erosion control and climate regulation. These functions are vital for maintaining ecosystem balance, supporting wildlife and delivering essential benefits to the surrounding communities. While the Site has likely experienced natural changes over time, including in water levels, vegetation structure and wildlife populations, conservation measures and government management strategies are often implemented to mitigate negative impacts and maintain its ecological integrity.
