The Ebute Oni Coastal Wetland Site in Ijebu Waterside Local Government Area is bordered by the coastline of the Bay of Benin and Lagos Lagoon. The wetland is characterized by coastal marsh and hosts a diverse range of plants and animals which are endemic to the coastal and swamp wetlands of the country. The Site is home to several threatened animals such as the critically endangered Cross River gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli), the endangered Sclater’s guenon (Cercopithecus sclateri) and sea otter (Enhydra lutris), and the vulnerable Gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica). It hosts several waterbirds such as the great blue heron (Ardea herodias herodias) and sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus). It is also rich in flora, including multipurpose plants used for both food and medicinal purposes such as raffia palm (Raphia hookeri), papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), American duckweed (Elodea canadensis) and the endangered ironwood (Lophira alata). The Site is important for flood control and water purification, and filtering chemicals and sediment from upstream sewage discharges before they reach the ocean, in addition to being a source of fish for local communities and a recreational area for tourists.
