The Styrian Salzkammergut is a region in the Alps, between the Totes Gebirge mountain range and the Styrian Dachstein plateau. Wetlands can be found across the whole area, especially in the valley, but also in the mountains. Most of them are degraded by former human use, notably peat harvesting and drainage; the remaining bogs are small and affected by past interventions but still very valuable for the region. The Site consists of three areas: Miesboden, Zlaimmöser and Flecklmoos, which are near-natural temperate-alpine wetlands in excellent condition. The areas include various wetland types listed under the European Union Habitats Directive and they are all under Natura 2000 protection. These wetlands host rare and threatened species and plant communities, with the noteworthy presence of many endangered mosses such as Calligergon richardsonii. There is an open water area which provides habitat for dragonflies and other insects, ducks and also leeches. The Site is used for extensive hunting and extensive farming (as summer pasture for cattle) and for recreation (hiking, mountain biking and collecting of berries and mushrooms). Voluntary fencing of certain bogs has been implemented to reduce the risk of excessive grazing.
