The Site is a large tidal bay located at the southern tip of eastern mainland Australia. It features 14 wetland types, including mangroves, extensive seagrass beds, creeks, bays, large sand islands, intertidal salt marshes and submerged sand and mud flats. The mud flats and marshes provide both feeding and high tide roost sites to over 35 migratory waterbird species, such as the vulnerable curlew sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) and the endangered lesser sand plover (Charadrius mongolus). In addition, the bay features a high diversity and abundance of fish species; notably, the critically endangered school shark (Galeorhinus galeus) is known to use the Site as a pupping area. The Site is also home to bog gum (Eucalyptus kitsoniana), an endangered tree that is adapted to waterlogged coastal environments. A management plan developed in 2015 identified sediment and nutrient pollution from land uses in the surrounding catchment, particularly farming and forestry, as well as invasive species among key threats. Activities to control the invasive species are carried out among other measures to implement the plan.
