Loch Maree. 19/09/94; Scotland; 3,174 ha; 57°41'N 005°28'W. National Nature Reserve, Special Protection Area, SSSI. A large nutrient-poor loch supporting outstanding assemblages of flora and fauna, including five nationally scarce aquatic plants, a nationally outstanding assemblage of dragonflies, and a genetically distinct population of char (Salvelinus alpinus). The single most important breeding population of Black-throated Diver, Gavia arctica, in Britain occurs at the site. Human activities include tourism, fishing, and livestock grazing.
