CarouselMaterials presented on this website, particularly maps and territorial information, are as-is and as-available based on available data and do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area, or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries.
The Site is a complex of numerous fishponds and the remnants of marshy river beds created in the 1930s in place of the regulated “Őssárvíz” marshland. The characteristic vegetation includes reedbeds, sedge communities and sodic pastures. The wetland plays an important role in maintaining the biological diversity of the biogeographic region and supports amphibians and birds during critical life stages such as breeding and migration. It supports numerous endangered and protected plants and animals, including the globally threatened common pochard Aythya ferina. It also hosts over 1% of the population of greylag goose Anser anser. Human activities include agriculture and forestry, as well as tourism. The Hungarian Ornithological Association organizes excursions and camps for school groups and students.
