The Site consists of a 17-kilometre stretch of the San Pedro – Meoqui River in the centre of the River’s basin. It is an important regulator of the regional climate, and provides a habitat across a vast desert region in which areas capable of providing water are scarce, particularly during the frequent periods of drought in northern Mexico. Because of this, the River is considered a lifeline, where some of the region’s great diversity of terrestrial and aquatic fauna rest, feed and drink. The wetland is home to significant congregations of aquatic birds, both residents and migrants that annually travel between Canada, the United States and Mexico, such as the sandhill crane (Antigone canadensis), snow goose (Anser caerulescens), Ross’s goose (Anser rossii) and white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons). Mexican duck (Anas platyrhynchos diazi), migrants such as the aplomado falcon (Falco femoralis), peregrine falcon (F. peregrinus), Mexican falcon (F. mexicanus), and priority species for conservation such as the meadow pipit (Anthus spragueii) have also been reported. The area has become a family recreation site, visited primarily to observe the migratory birds that choose this wetland to spend the winter.
