The Site consists of eight endorheic reservoirs and lagoons located in the Sierra Tarahumara area of the Sierra Madre Occidental range in south-western Chihuahua. Its importance is due to its role in controlling and preventing flooding and in retaining seasonal water. This wetland complex plays an important role as a winter habitat for aquatic birds on their migration paths, and provides feeding and resting areas for birds through all the seasons. Historically, these lagoons have been important habitats for the Mexican duck (Anas platyrhynchos diazi), which they share with migratory waterfowl species. The Site includes one of the last remaining mature pine-oak forests that has not been subject to commercial logging, making it one of the best habitats for the diverse flora and fauna which is characteristic of the area, with the presence of endemic species. Two of the wetlands (Lago de las Garzas and Presa las Truchas) are located within a completely urban environment (Guachochi City) and the population uses them for recreation and tourism. At the same time, environmental education campaigns are carried out, as well as cleaning campaigns.
