The Site lies in the central and southeastern highlands of Angola, within the Zambezi biogeographical region. It forms a major watershed, feeding river systems that sustain downstream wetlands such as the Okavango Delta and the Zambezi Floodplain. The site’s hydrology is shaped by deep sandy soils that filter rainfall into clear, low-mineral streams. This groundwater system supports extensive Miombo forests and peatlands across more than 110,000 km². The area hosts the endangered and near-endemic carnivorous plant Genlisea angolensis, along with rare and threatened wildlife including cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), lion (Panthera leo), African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), and the critically endangered giant sable (Hippotragus niger ssp. variani). The Site holds exceptional freshwater diversity, with over 18 endemic or near-endemic fish species, several of which may be new to science. It is also an important spawning area for the migratory African tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus). Lisima Lya Mwono a central role in safeguarding biodiversity and maintaining hydrological systems of regional and global significance. Water abstraction and unspecified development are current threats to its ecological character.
