The Site is a brackish estuary with changing levels of salinity and seasonal fluctuations in water levels that support a mosaic of interconnected wetland habitats. The reedbeds, mudflats, sandbars, vegetated embankments and adjacent farmland together provide important ecological functions: they serve as spawning and nursery grounds for fish, resting and foraging areas for migratory birds, and movement corridors for mammals. More than 1,000 species have been recorded at the Site, reflecting its exceptional biodiversity. These include several wetland-dependent species endemic to the Korean Peninsula, including the Korean brown frog (Rana coreana) and the flathead sleeper (Odontobutis platycephala). The estuary lies on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and so is especially important as a stopover site for migratory waterbirds including the critically endangered Baer’s pochard (Aythya baeri). The Site faces pressures from embankment operations that alter tidal flow and salinity regimes, and agricultural runoff that increases nutrient and sediment loads. To address these pressures, programmes including community-based initiatives are in place to monitor the hydrology and reedbed health. The Site’s management plan has identified as priorities habitat restoration and expansion, maintenance of natural estuarine flow and salinity regimes, and strengthening of buffer zones and ecological connectivity.
