Overview

Irthinghead Mires. 17/07/85; England; 792 ha; 55°05'N 002°31'W. Nature Reserve, SSSI, Forest Park. A composite site embracing seven separate areas of mire near the Irthing River's source. The site displays internationally important examples of blanket mire, a notable variety of mosses, and typical mire vegetation. It supports breeding waders, several rare plants, and a rare spider. The mires appear to be gradually drying-out as a result of nearby afforestation. Ramsar site no. 303. Most recent RIS information: 1999.
