The Site includes three main lagoon bodies: Zóñar, Amarga and Rincón. With at least 218 species (172 animals and 46 plants), of which some are endemic or threatened, the Site is of high conservation interest. The wetland is particularly important as habitat to internationally endangered bird species including the white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala). This Site stands out for its rich cultural and archaeological heritage, reflecting a long-standing interdependent relationship between humans and wetlands through historical settlements, traditional practices, and sustainable use. Temperature extremes pose a particularly high threat to the ecosystem. A conservation and restoration plan is being implemented.
