Overview

Starnberger See. 26/02/76; Bayern; 5,720 ha; 47°45'N 011°18'E. Nature Reserve, Landscape Reserve. A large, freshwater lake subject to seasonal fluctuations set in a glaciated valley and surrounded by end-moraine dams. The site supports areas of reedbeds, is important for breeding, staging and wintering waterbirds, and provides protected fish spawning areas. There are three large leisure complexes available, and the lake experiences intensive recreational use and seasonal fishing. Ramsar site no. 94. Most recent RIS information: 1992.
