Laguna de Santiaguillo is the most important and representative wetland in the Durango valleys region, comprising two lakes – one intermittent and one permanent – that together account for 80% of the state’s total wetland area. As one of the few water resources in this arid, semi-desert region, the Site is vital for the local hydrological system and climate regulation. The Site is a key wintering site for migratory waterfowl traveling from breeding grounds in Alaska and Canada; it hosts large populations of ducks, cranes and geese. It also provides nesting grounds for restricted-range species such as the Mexican duck (Anas diazi) and for abundant species such as the northern pintail (Anas acuta). The extensive stands of broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia) within the Site are especially important for them. The main threats to the Site are drought and water abstraction. In response, the Laguna de Santiaguillo Management Program includes a restoration subprogramme aimed at halting environmental deterioration and restoring affected areas through community involvement.
