Overview
The Site is a permanent inland freshwater wetland located in the Middle Zagros mountain range. It is particularly notable for its plant diversity, with 129 species from 32 families and 87 genera identified. The Site is one of the most important habitats in the Islamic Republic of Iran for the endemic Zagros pupfish (Aphanius vladykovi). The wetlands are important wintering habitat for several bird species, including the critically endangered sociable lapwing (Vanellus gregarius) and the vulnerable common pochard (Aythya ferina). As a destination for tourism and education, the Site features a centre for communication, education, participation and increasing environmental awareness and bird hide shelters for birdwatching. While drought, climate change, fire, and pollution pose threats to the wetland, experts regularly monitor the Site in accordance with the Gandoman Wetland Management Plan. Moreover, local communities play a role in mitigating such threats due to the wetland’s importance to their livelihoods and spiritual beliefs. In 2025 the nearby city of Gandoman was accredited under the Convention as a “Wetland City”.
